Hypnosis - Hypnotherapy

American Health Magazine

Reported the following findings from a study:

  • Psychoanalysis 38% recovery after 600 sessions
  • Behavior Therapy 72% recovery after 22 sessions
  • Hypnotherapy 93% recovery after 6 sessions
Few people know hypnosis is a dynamic and vital healing process embracing all aspects of mental health care. Hypnosis is client-centered with its focus on the discovery of the origin of a person’s issues.."

Research shows that it eases pain, speeds healing, increases fertility, even fights cancer.

In another study, Olafur Palsson, PsyD, a clinical psychologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, reported an 80% success rate among 18 IBS patients who were treated with hypnosis after conventional care failed. Those results, coupled with several other recent studies on IBS and hypnosis, are remarkable, says psychologist Arreed Barabasz, PhD, director of the Hypnosis Laboratory at Washington State University and editor of the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. "These findings show that benefits of hypnotherapy for IBS are long lasting and that continued improvement after hypnosis treatment ends is the norm."

What is Hypnosis?

Picture
Hypnosis is simply suggestions being made to the subconscious.  Being hypnotized is like daydreaming. You will be very aware of what is being said and done around you.

People go in and out of a hypnotic-type consciousness everyday.  Ever caught yourself staring into space and daydreaming? Congratulations, you have been hypnotized.  Hypnosis compares to daydreaming in that you are still completely a part of your surroundings, however, your mind wanders.

In hypnosis, the hypnotist gives suggestions to guide a person through a mind journey. By guiding you through the subconscious, the guide can give powerful suggestions that will help you to successfully make changes to your negative and sometimes self destructive behaviors, while substituting them for positive ones.  Hypnosis works because it affects your subconscious mind, which is unable to reason. Since it cannot reason, it accepts and acts upon the conscious mind’s suggestions.

There is more to hypnosis than just self-induced hypnotic tapes or the receiving of suggestions from a hypnotist. While these are both valid parts of hypnosis, there is more science behind the practice. Brain waves are influential in the effectiveness of hypnosis. The brain has several states. They are:
  •  Beta: Waking state
  •  Alpha: Focused concentration*
  •  Theta: Deep meditation*
  •  Delta: Dream state

When the brain is at the alpha or theta state, hypnosis is effective. The mind is influenced during the delta and theta states. In this situation, the voice is a powerful tool; hence the hypnotherapist is invaluable here.  The subconscious mind can be seen as the connection between the nervous system and the conscious mind. This is why hypnosis is often used to unblock a memory.

During the hypnotherapy session, you will be sitting comfortable and will probably feel light, weightless, and calm.  You will be very relaxed  yet extremely focused.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy has been approved by the American Medical Association since 1958, and he American Dental Association & the American Psychological Association, shortly thereafter.  It has been used in clinical settings for well over 150 years, around the world.  This is typically used to treat the symptoms associated with emotional, behavioral, habitual, social, and medical issues and/or a specific problem such as shyness, smoking cessation, or weight loss.

Hypnotherapy is usually done in a practice office with deliberate planning and treatment.  Put simply, hypnotherapy is a method of speaking to the inner-most part of your mind - your subconscious - to eliminate old habits and behaviors and to generate new, beneficial behaviors. Often hypnosis is done as a solitary treatment or in conjunction with other treatments to solve a person’s problem.

A different way to see Hypnotherapy is that it is done using hypnosis for therapeutic purposes to calm the mind and relax the body.  It involves suggestions for relaxation,  your well being, or making positive changes.  Hypnotherapy is the clinical term used to describe treatment with a trained professional hypnotist.

Hypnosis is simply a stage of conscious awareness - Think of Hypnotherapy as meditating but guided with a specific intent .

Many people do not realize that there is a long history behind hypnosis due to its effective healing methods.

How can hypnosis help you?

Hypnosis has been used for centuries as a treatment for chronic pain relief, or pain relief during actual surgery. Today it's use expands beyond just relief from pain to many other uses.  Hypnosis is a powerful tool that can be used to help with many common problems such as smoking addiction, overeating & other eating disorders, phobias, and more. Treating these personal issues can help people live more meaningful and enjoyable lives.
Many people have something in their lives they would like to change. Hypnosis might be the answer. Perhaps hypnosis can help you overcome a challenging part of your life that you have been struggling with for years.

Myths around Hypnosis

The image of hypnosis has been abused for entertainment purposes for a long time, which has damaged the reputation of a reliable, effective, and helpful tool.  It is commonly misrepresented in movies, or on television, and is often the butt of jokes. Stage Hypnosis is used  to entertain people by getting them to cluck like a chicken on stages, under the guise of hypnosis.  This is simply fictionalized for entertainment purpose only.

People that are hypnotized continue to have complete control over themselves and their surroundings.
